One of Victoria's oldest ports, Port Fairy is home to a large fishing fleet and maintains the historic atmosphere of an old seaport. Located 28km west of Warrnambool, the town is bordered by both ocean and river, and its sandy beaches, sheltered harbour and historic buildings make it popular with heritage-lovers and holidaymakers.

Port Fairy originated as a whaling and sealing station in the 1830s, but as whale and seal numbers decreased, the population turned to fishing and farming. For a time the town was known as Belfast, and although the name was changed back to Port Fairy in 1887 there is still a northern Irish influence. A stroll around the historic streets reveals cottages, old bluestone and sandstone warehouses, grand merchants' homes and impressive public buildings, with more than 50 buildings classified by the National Trust.
