Just 15 minutes drive from Launceston along the West Tamar Highway is the picturesque village of Grindelwald. It was established in 1980 by Roelf Voss, who was inspired to create the village after a visit to Switzerland, where he fell in love with the Alpine style of architecture. Set in the Tamar Valley with magnificent river and mountain views, the village of Grindelwald comprises a seven-hectare lake and authentic Swiss-style chalets with high-pitched roofs, wide eaves, exposed beams, white-painted exteriors and balconies.
One of the features of the Grindelwald area is its quiet idyllic residential and rural setting. The Tamar Valley has a rich colonial heritage and is home to many artisans, with galleries and shops specialising in local art and crafts. It also boasts outstanding restaurants and some of the state's leading vineyards, which produce award winning cool climate wines.
