Exeter lies in the heart of the Tamar Valley,
Tasmania's major cool-climate wine-producing region. Distinctive road signs indicate the Tamar Valley Wine Route where most vineyards have cellar door sales and many have their own restaurants. The town also serves a large rural district and an important fruit growing area, noted for its apples, pears, cherries and grapes. A feature of Exeter is Brady's Lookout, 5km south of the town. This rocky outcrop was frequented by the notorious bushranger, Matthew Brady, who used this point to spy on the movements of troops and likely prospects travelling to and from
Launceston.
