Dover sits at the edge of Esperance Bay and looks out over the islands of Faith, Hope and Charity. English trees and quaint old cottages give this small fishing port, which once bore the French name of Esperance, an old-world atmosphere. Its origin as a convict station is retained in the well-preserved Commandant’s Office on Beach Road. It developed as an important port for shipping Huon pine to the rest of the world and in the 1950s the sawmills were busy. Today Dover is a centre for apple orchards, salmon, abalone and crayfishing. Its Atlantic salmon fish farm is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
