It is listed by the World Heritage Commission as one of the most precious places on earth, renowned for its stunning mountain scenery, ancient rainforest, glacial lakes and tarns as well as unique wildlife, including many species of migratory birds. Two of the park's features are Mount Ossa, Tasmania's highest peak at 1617m, and the serene Lake St Clair, Australia's deepest freshwater lake. The park's main facility area is the Cradle Valley, immediately north of the park, where most of the accommodation is located.
