Tanunda is the cultural heart of the
Barossa wine region. Just 70km north of
Adelaide, Tanunda is the focus of the area winemakers call the 'floor of the valley'. It is totally surrounded by vineyards and no matter which way you look there is a vineyard at the end of the street.
Tanunda started out as a settlement on the North Para River, named Langmeil, established in 1843 by Pastor Kavel. In its early years the town was the very essence of German Lutheranism – there was a German newspaper (1855), a number of Lutheran churches, a brass band, a German nine-pin bowling alley and even a liedertafel (choir). The small village of Bethany, just south of Tanunda, is the site of the first German settlement in the valley in 1842, and the area is noted for its examples of early East German architecture.
For many years people believed that Tanunda was a German name, but in fact it is an Aboriginal word which reputedly means either 'watering hole' or 'many birds on a creek'. The town continues to have a distinctly German feel with 'wurst' shops, German bread shops or German-style restaurants and wineries.
