Port Lincoln was one of several contenders for the capital of South Australia, and is now considered the informal capital of the Eyre Peninsula. Port Lincoln's economy is driven by the huge grain handling facilities, the canning and fish processing works, fertiliser production and, in recent times, the vast wealth which has been made as a result of tuna fishing for the lucrative Japanese market. Boston Bay is Australia's largest natural harbour - it is about three times the size of Sydney Harbour - and home to the tuna fishing fleets of the Great Australian Bight.
Port Lincoln was first sighted by Matthew Flinders in 1802, who dropped anchor in Boston Bay and named the site after his native Lincolnshire in England. Port Lincoln was an important resting point for sealers from
Kangaroo Island and whalers from Port Jackson who fished and hunted in the Southern Ocean. The first free settlers also arrived by sea in 1839, aboard the ships
