Clare is the major township in the mid north of South Australia. It is an ideal base from which to explore the Clare Valley, one of Australia's premium wine producing districts, noted for its rieslings.

The historic and charming town of Clare was first settled in 1842 by Edward Gleeson, who named it after his home county, County Clare in Ireland. He was soon followed by pastoralists and other settlers, including a community of Jesuit priests from Austria. They built a church and a school at Sevenhill and planted the first grape vines in the Clare Valley in 1848. The Sevenhill Cellars is the valley's oldest winery, started by the Austrian Jesuits in 1851. The Clare region now supports a mix of cereal cropping, sheep and dairy farming as well as the vineyards.
