Things to Do in Sydney

Things to see and do in Sydney, Sydney highlights, Sydney activities and attractions, and points of interest in Sydney - the Jasons Sydney Things to Do Guide is your complete guide to sightseeing in Sydney.

  • The Sydney Harbour Bridge
Dubbed the 'coathanger' due to its design, spans one of the narrowest inlets in the harbour. Opened in 1932, visitors can now climb to the top of the bridge (it takes 3 hours) with a tour guide.
  • The Rocks
Sitting between the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House, The Rocks is the site of Australia's first European settlement. The original narrow cobblestone lanes and workman's cottages are mostly intact and today house restaurants, cafés and shops. There are also historic pubs including the Lord Nelson and the Hero of Waterloo.
  • The Royal Botanic Gardens
Wrapped around Farm Cove and bordering Wooloomooloo Bay you'll find the Royal Botanic Gardens. The site has been a botanical garden since 1816, although it is the original place where the first settlers planted vegetables, with the outline of these plots still in existence. Other highlights include the National Herbarium and the Sydney Tropical Centre.
  • Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is a sprawling inner city waterside complex that encompasses Harbourside Shopping Centre, Sydney Aquarium, a monorail, IMAX Theatre and a virtual reality theme park called Sega World. It also incorporates two Aboriginal cultural centres, Chinatown and the giant Star City Casino. It is a good one-stop spot for dining, shopping and entertainment.
  • Bondi Beach
Located at Bondi Bay, Bondi Beach is one of Australia's best-known icons. Apart from the beach, other attractions include the Bondi Baths (saltwater pool), Bondi Pavilion, which includes a theatre, gallery and ballroom, and the Promenade, which is a popular walking and cycling track.
  • Taronga Park Zoo
The Taronga Park Zoo sits on the water's edge in the up market suburb of Mosman. It is home to more than 4000 animals.
  • Homebush Bay
The main venue for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and Paralympic Games, and located about 15km west of the city. Homebush Bay encompasses most of the sporting stadiums, as well as 40 hectares of parkland and 60 hectares of conservation wetlands. Bus tours, guided and self-guided walking tours are available.
  • Centrepoint Sydney Tower
Australia's tallest building at 300m, Centrepoint Sydney Tower is the best spot to get a panoramic view of Sydney, either from the observatory or the revolving restaurant.
