This area is known as the 'Big Sky Country' because of the cloudless skies and starry nights over the region's vast plains.  Here you can experience the real Australia, with historic country towns, farming communities, wide inland rivers and dams to fish in, national parks with fascinating geological features, bushwalking trails and gemfields for fossickers. It includes Australia's Country Music Capital of Tamworth, the 'Sapphire City' of Inverell and historic Tenterfield, where Henry Parkes delivered his famous Federation speech in 1889.

There are over 17 national parks in the New England area, with gorges and waterfalls, pristine wilderness, Australian native animals and opportunities for outdoor activities as diverse as kayaking, birdwatching and rock climbing. The New England region's national parks are also renowned worldwide for their brown and rainbow trout.
